The Prayers of Your Children….

We were putting the kids to bed last night &, as usual, asked baby girl if she wanted a turn to pray. She said yes, and began her prayer. As she’s talking to God, I hear this very specific request that I ask God ALL THE TIME. It pertains to a specific area of struggle for me & isn’t a common (at least to my knowledge) thing that many people I know struggle with.

Then it hit me….SHE WAS PRAYING MY PRAYERS! This brought a flood of questions to my mind!

How is this shaping who & what she will become? What is she coming to understand about God in the things she is hearing? What is she learning about me as her mother, & more so, me as a flawed human being? Will these prayers lead her to understand her own personal need for Christ in her life, when she reaches a point of understanding? Is my life a true reflection of my deepest needs when I bring them to God through prayer?

As a Christian parent, when I get a small glimpse of what is commanded of me in raising these little blessing, it can be pretty overwhelming, to say the least. I know that I am responsible for pointing the soul of these tiny humans to God. That alone, is a huge revelation & fraught with scary possibilities. It forces me to consider my own fallen humanity. My prayers are another part of that great big responsibility. I am not only to set an example through how I live my life, but also by how I express myself to God.

How can I be sure that my prayers are covering all the question that came to my mind? Thank God He always has the answers! There are several ways that I can know for certain that I’m praying all the proper things & they all fall under one word: OBEDIENCE. God has this amazing way of simplifying the things I complicate (insert facepalm emoji). If I just obey what is already written in God’s word, I cannot fail!

  1. Praying under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 6:18).
  2. Being honest about my sins in prayer (Proverbs 28:13)
  3. Sharing my true feeling & emotions about any given situation or circumstance, even the good things (Psalm 62:8, Psalm 55:22).
  4. Lifting up others in prayer (James 5:16).
  5. Asking for things from a clean heart that will produce pure motives (Psalm 19:14, James 4:3)

Arming myself with the truth of God’s word will fortify my prayers with all the proper ingredients that my babies can use to point their hearts in the right direction – straight to Jesus!
